saturday 7:00 pm

Oldest drove me, with my helmet, up to the pizza joint in town.
I sat on a bench outside and waited for K.
There was opera being piped out to the sidewalk.
The evening was cool and pink,
and couples of all ages emerged from the restaurant, holding hands.
The scent of fabric softener wafted through the air.
We had fried calamari, K and I,
and talked about going to Italy while consulting the placemat map.
And then, snuggled up against him on his scooter,
he drove me home in the dark.

There's a special place in your heart for the oldest. (I, too, have 3 boys.) He's only 17, but he's not just a son, he's a friend whose company I enjoy.
