the scene: family dinner in the dining room
the food: tortelloni with pesto cream sauce

Oldest: Would it be okay if I had a glass of wine with this?

bbird: gah.

It may take a few years for me to get used to this.

My Oldest knows more about wine than I do now.

I'm still getting used to drinking with my parents. So its not a one-sided discomfort in some families (though my folks act like they are totally cool with it, and don't go gah)

Some of my happiest memories of my father were when we'd sit down and have a cocktail before dinner when I was in my 20s. My mother didn't drink and my father and I couldn't communicate, but that little bit of scotch or gin allowed us at least a tiny bit of cheer and closeness.

I was started on port and lemon at the grand old age of 4 by an eccentric Aunt. I still love this drink when I have it at christmas.

Gah, indeed.

At Chatham Bars Inn, waitress asks if anyone would like a drink. The Princess orders a frozen strawberry daiquiri.

Silence descends.

Oh. Right. 21.

The times they are a-changing....

Aside from the how-can-he-be-this-old factor, now there's the splitting-the-bottle-three-ways factor.
GAH is right!

At least he asked?

Oh yeah. I don't drink often, so my dad at a party often won't ASK if I want wine, as he asks other guests, even though my younger brother is over there with beers, plural. Fambly drinkin'-- it's a GAH situation.
