show and tell: butter dish

ah.
the quest for the butter dish.
why do things get all Holy Grail-ish around here?
the quest for the coffee machine...
the search for sneakers...
the damn winter coat (I'm not linking, you can't take it.)
You don't feel that I over think things do you?
naaaaaaaaah.

Okay - so, I explained the problem with the flying, now broken, butter dish.
And so, you realize that the dish that goes in the fridge needed replacing.
Yes, I got just dozens of emails from kind souls suggesting the butter bell.
But we have a butter bell - and we love it...for room temperature butter.

And so my work began.
I even got K involved as he was with me in Target one morning. Lucky him.
They had four. We rejected all of them.
(can you believe I can even go on at such length regarding the dish for the freaking butter?)
Pottery Barn
Crate and Barrel
Bed Bath and Beyond
No. No. And NO.
Yeah, sure, I have dozens of adorable crocks, and ramekins, and wee bowls.
No.
That's not what we want.
We (the collective we)(the Tuvalans who cherish butter) want a dish, with a cover, that fits in the door, upon which a stick of butter languishes in the cool darkness. A dish whose cover may be lifted and a butter knife may slice straight down thereby releasing a tablespoon or so of buttery goodness.
Except we don't actually own any butter knives.
Which brings me to the topic of flatware.
Which I will discuss -
next week.

So - I am hoping that your butter dishes will inspire me -
and next week, show me and Sarah Louise your windows.

Well, I love my Emile Henry butter dish. I had a red one, which was broken by a small child (mine), so now we have a blue one.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000645T5/102-6744185-2211327?v=glance&n=284507

It's very functional, solid, has more than enough room for different sized sticks (they don't hit the edges) and is lovely.

Good luck!

I'm going to get my butter dish up there for you tomorrow - but letting you know I'm instigating a "Sunday is Confession day" posting. As big or little, serious or trite. We want it. On Sunday.

And dude - it's butter, this is important.

(although I think what we call a butter dish is what you guys call a butter bell)

I have one of those long glass dishes and a plastic one that keeps the sticks of butter in the door. I even have one of those tubes that a stick of butter slides into and you push it out the end as needed. I do not like them. I love my old butter bell I found in an old secondhand/junk shop.

It is up.

Alas, I have no butter dish. Not the kind you're talking about, anyway. We just stick it on a plate.

Mine are up, but won't help you in your quest, I'm afraid. (Questing is good and noble - don't stop. Even if you feel like the Don Quixote of butter dishes...or something. Impossible dreams, etc.)

I'm up. Sorta. Ugh.

I'm up too - and I should have read your full post first because I have posed you a question that it now appears you are already asking yourself: what does one do for a FRIDGE butter dish? Especially important in climates like Australia, and, I imagine, Tuvalu!

Off to see all these other butter options now...
