cans

More information on the cans we found in the oven:
  • they are those big tomato cans
  • they have been washed and flattened, but not completely
  • the oven has two racks, one rack was near the top of the oven and one near the bottom
  • the cans were resting on the bottom rack
  • it's an electric oven
  • there are plenty of cookie sheets in the house

I think they were there to hold up a cookie sheet so the bottom of the cookies don't burn.

They were garbage, to be recycled, but they didnt want to leave them anywhere accessible to small children before it was time to put them out or take them to the recylcing center or however they handle such things on the Cape. But then, alas, they forgot about them.

Still going with my "to even out the heat distribution in the oven" guess.

They were put there, so the next tenant like you can ask the question why they were there and we guess, guess, but can not come up with a real answer. :P

I'm in the washed and dried recycle camp. But...I can see washing the cans but who dries them; let alone in the oven? Kind of counter intuitive with the whole save energy/recycle thing.

My granny used to do this when we went to the beach with dinner or when she had a church supper. She would use them to keep dishes warm in a basket or a cooler...it works the opposite.
They were there to create conversation and alleviate potential boredom of the next tennant.

For a moment I thought perhaps they were used to create a smoker. Fill them full of dampened wood shavings to smoke ribs or fish 'a la Alton'.
But you indicated they were cleaned and i assume still clean when you found them. So perhaps they filled them with ice to make steam when baking bread. I shall ponder on...

So-did you leave them for the next tenant?

May I just say that is HUGE container of surface wipes!

I really like the idea that they are basket warmers for going to the beach with hot food.
